An Innovative Approach Towards Designer-Orientated CAD Systems

Many CAD systems provide the basic functionality required by designers without the ease of use and flexibility also necessary for effectiveness and efficiency. This paper presents an innovative approach towards making CAD systems more designer-oriented, based on an effective integration of the CAD data structure and its associated user-interface. The principal features of a prototype system are described, with emphasis on the systematic coordination of these two components of a CAD system. A simple example is used to illustrate the underlying concepts, while the innovative aspects of the system are highlighted vis-a-vis the inherent benefits to the designer. It is concluded that the adoption of a rational approach is fundamental in the development of CAD systems and that embodying many of the concepts presented would result in systems that more efficiently aid design development.
