A Case Study of an Innovative Re-Roofing Project

This paper deals with an ‘umbrella ’structure, illustrated in Fig I , to provide support to a new roof deck over a series of existing two storey flat-roof buildings. This solution was adopted after investigation of various options, such as replacing the existing bituminous-felt membrane with a modern fabric or by placing a lightweight pitched roof fixed to the existing structure. Consideration was also given to a new-build solution, but costs were prohibitive. This project is being carried out under the GC Works I Form of Contract and costs are in the region of £6M. B. Taylor
