In a similar pattern to last year’s presidential encounter, I met Brian Simpson towards the close of his year of office and on the eve of his departure to Canada for the fist leg of the annual overseas tour. The overall impression from this meeting was of the underlying healthy state of civil and structural engineering in the United Kingdom, despite the climate of recession which has dogged the construction industry over the past 4/5 years.
