Technician membership - academic requirements

The academic requirement for a Technician Member is one of the following:

  • A National Certificate (NC) or National Diploma (ND) in either:
    • Civil Engineering
    • Civil Engineering Studies
    • Construction and the Built Environment
    • Building Studies
  • An approved academic or vocational qualification at level 3 in the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) or level 6 in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF)
  • A City & Guilds Higher Professional Diploma in a relevant engineering discipline
  • A technical certificate as part of an approved Advanced Modern Apprenticeship Programme
  • An approved level 3 NVQ or SVQ in a relevant subject
  • A foundation degree in Structural/Civil or Construction Engineering

If you hold a qualification in a peripheral field and are not sure of its equivalence, you can apply for an academic assessment

International agreements

Candidates holding qualifications recognised under the Dublin Accord currently meet the academic requirements for Technician membership.

Route B Appraisal

If you do not hold any of the qualifications listed above but have gained significant knowledge and skills during the course of your employment you may be able to apply for a Route B Appraisal.

This in-depth appraisal is aimed at experienced practicing Engineering Technicians who have gained the necessary knowledge and skills for their job through working closely with other skilled colleagues over a number of years.
