Young Members’ Group Queensland, ‘YMQ’
We are a committee of graduates and students set up to promote structural engineering and membership of The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) by running a variety of learning and networking events targeted at the young structural engineers of Queensland.
To assist in maintaining a clear direction of the YMQ, the committee has adopted a theme of ‘Eat, Meet and Learn’.
Events are advertised via the Facebook page or alternatively please contact the below email to join our mailing list or express interest in joining the committee.

Leo Karadimitris - Treasurer
Leo is a structural engineer with ADG Engineers, Brisbane. After completing his Bachelors degree at The University of Queensland in 2015, Leo began his graduate journey by familiarising himself with concrete and steel structures on projects around South-East Queensland. Leo has continued to strengthen his technical competencies on projects in the residential, retail, commercial and education sectors. As the demand to build with mass timbers increases, Leo has built technical proficiencies in this area and potentially sees himself specialising in this area. He is currently involved with ADG Engineers as the primary engineers on Howard Smith Wharves, an iconic redevelopment of a prized piece of Brisbane’s riverfront real estate. Being involved in a project such as this allows Leo to gain vast experience working on site, alongside other consultants in preliminary meetings, and is faced with complex design problems every day. In the future, Leo sees himself engaging further with The Institution of Structural Engineers as he highly values collaboration amongst the industry.
Lauren Best - Communications Officer
Lauren is a structural engineer within Jacobs’ Industrial team. With over five years consulting structural design experience, Lauren has delivered projects for industrial, resources and transport infrastructure clients. Many of these projects have involved upgrades to brownfield sites, strength assessments and subsequent remediation of existing structures. Lauren is currently involved in designing surface infrastructure for a gold and copper mine in Mongolia and is working towards achieving chartered status.
Alaya Kota - Committee Member
