Evening technical talk
An evening technical talk for members of The Institution of Structural Engineers was held at The Beatles, Powai, Mumbai on Aug 6.
The meeting started with an introduction of the Institution and the benefits of membership, followed by a number of technical presentations, including:
Environment and sustainability
Vivek Mewada, Assistant Manager at Mahindra Lifespaces, provided insights into the concept of sustainability and its integration to different construction stages. He explained design related sustainability viz. embodied energy, life cycle analysis and calculation of carbon footprint for various construction activities and materials.
He also highlighted the importance of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as a tool for accessing environmental and sustainability impacts, including the role of The Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (MoEFCC).
Historic buildings, CDM and nuclear decommissioning
Mike Evans, a chartered structural engineer leading the structural team at ARUP Mumbai, presented on this important topic,discussing the importance of planning in CDM with reference to some of his high profile historic building retrofit projects in UK and India. Using examples, Mike emphasised the vital importance of understanding the root causes of structural distress when dealing with historic buildings. He also discussed sketching, and how it brings clarity of thought for structural engineers looking for solutions.
Green building and LEED
The final presentation was delivered by Jaeran Kim Evans, a Korean architect and LEED AP. She has worked on a number of projects throughout South Korea both as an architect and as environmental consultant. Jaeran articulated the why, what and how of green buildings and elaborated on different categories and credits. She further spoke about different LEED ratings.
The evening was intellectually stimulating and interactive, and ended with a sumptuous dinner and networking opportunity. Thanks to all who took part.
