Institution Fellow receives New Zealand Order of Merit
Congratulations to Richard Aitken, Executive Chairman of Beca, who received the Order of Merit in the New Zealand New Years Honours List.
Richard, who has been a member of the Institution since 1971, was recognised for his outstanding achievements with Beca Group, as well as his work developing young engineers, representing the profession on legislative and industry bodies, and promoting New Zealand's engineering capabilities overseas.
Richard has been with Beca since the late 1960s, seeing it grow from a practice of around 40 employees to 3000 today. Among other achievements Richard has overseen major projects such as the Manukau Wastewater Plant, Auckland Motorway Projects, and the Waterview Tunnel. He was also presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering from the University of Auckland in 2016.
“It is an honour to have received the Order of Merit. Anything I’ve achieved has usually been the result of a team effort. I have always encouraged clients, designers, contractors, operators, etc. to work collaboratively together to get the desired project outcomes. I am a great believer in the sensible use of collaborative contract models to carry out projects where there are diverse risks. Projects in which we all share some pain and gain, usually bring the best out of the various parties involved. Being involved in these projects (totaling well over a billion NZ dollars) has been a satisfying experience for me.”
