A19/A1058 Improvement Junction Site Visit

Published: 04/12/2017

The Northern Counties Young Members’ Group visited improvement works at the A19/A1058 junction on 15 November.

Site visit
17 Student and Graduate Members attended. The junction suffers from peak time congestion and a higher-than-average accident rate. This project aims to reduce congestion and improve road safety for both motorists and pedestrians and cyclists traversing the route.

The Highways England project (managed under the consortium Lagan Construction Group Limited and Sisk Group (Lagan Sisk JV)) consists of:

•    The realignment of the A19 under the existing A19 roundabout
•    Constructing slip roads
•    Constructing three new, single span structures to allow the A1058 coast road and A19 roundabouts to cross over the realigned A19
•    Constructing retaining walls to minimise the use of land
•    Widening the Middle Engine Lane railway bridge to accommodate the A19 north facing slip roads.

Future A19/A1058 junction

This was a very good example for our young engineers and students to experience how structural and civil engineers get together to deliver a large project.

Michael Cortis, Chairman of the Young Members’ Group, said:

“Our Group aims to organise one or two site visits a year, and our activities are open to over 120 Graduate and 344 Student Members. Concurrently, Student Liaison Officers at universities in our area organise similar activities for their students.

“These trips are invaluable for our young members, as structural engineering is not just about designing load bearing structural elements, but more importantly how these elements are constructed and brought together to deliver a project.

“We are planning another site visit at the beginning of 2018, outreach activities in local schools, technical seminars, and also plan to get involved in events at local universities.

“Anyone interested in attending these trips is more than welcome to join our Group: we welcome everyone with an interest.”
