A number of distinguished guests were invited from the construction and engineering sector as well as members of the Institution. The visit coincided with the start of the President’s world tour, as well as the tenth anniversary of the Institution’s UAE Regional Group.

Mr. Alastair Long, HM Deputy Consul General at the British Embassy in Dubai, said:

“I am delighted to welcome The Institution of Structural Engineers to the embassy to celebrate its 10th year in the UAE. The UK has a long history of engineering innovation and excellence, and the Institution’s work over the past century is testament to that. The Department for International Trade brings together companies from the UK and the UAE to collaborate in this important sector.”

Ian Firth, President of The Institution, added:

“We are excited to be in the UAE and grateful for the support of the British Embassy and the Department for International Trade. Dubai is a city which is constantly evolving and highly-desirable base for many structural engineers worldwide.”

The UAE Regional Group has 400 members of various grades and we provide technical guidance and training to help pass the grueling seven hour Chartered Membership exam which allows members to use the coveted MIStructE post-nominals. The Group also organizes technical lectures at local universities to expose students to the career opportunities that lie ahead, as well as to provide up-to-date CPD to the engineering community in the UAE.

Mohamad Al-Dah, Chairman of the UAE Regional Group and a Director at the Dubai Land Department, added:

“We are proud of our achievements in the UAE, helping to promote the structural engineering profession. We will continue to work closely with academia as well as industry to provide relevant guidance and support for them to flourish”.
