Caribbean Regional Group's Bridge Design and Build competition 2017
The bridge building competition was held on January 28 in collaboration with the University of the West Indies, St Augustine (UWI) and the Association of Professional Engineers of Trinidad and Tobago (APETT).
For the ninth consecutive year the Bridge Design and Building competition was successfully hosted by The Institution's Caribbean Regional Group. Participating teenagers represented schools from the North, South, East and Central regions of Trinidad.
Since the inception of the competition in 2009, it has steadily grown in popularity and has been oversubscribed for the last three years, with around 35 schools participating each year. The event provides an opportunity for budding engineers to explore the practical challenges of construction, the effect of design on performance and the pressures and fun of working in a six person team. Teams were as varied as the schools represented and consisted of
all boys, all girls and mixed teams.
The design brief asked students to construct a bridge made of Eve Spaghetti (1 pack - 400g) and KC Marshmallows (1 pack -225g). Students were allowed two hours to build their bridges. The goal was to span a minimum of 300mm, a minimum width of 100mm, and carry a minimum load of 100g (there were no height requirements this year).
The top bridge was designed by Shiva Boys’ Hindu College.
They were closely followed by Chaguanas North Secondary School.
An all girls school team – Bishop Anstey High School, Port of Spain- placed in the top three.
The total load prior to collapse of the top three bridges was 2443.5g, 2317.6g and 1810.6g respectively. Congratulations to Shiva Boys’ Hindu school who managed to get the better of Chaguanas North Secondary School this year after coming third to the first place winners back in 2015 and achieving second place in 2016.
The prize for the most aesthetically pleasing entry was presented to the co-ed team from Sixth Form Government
The Regional Group would like to thank our sponsors; Shell Trinidad (Gold Sponsor), Southern Wholesale Stores Limited (Silver Sponsor) and Worsley Parsons Trinidad (Bronze Sponsor). Special thanks to Eve and KC Candy for supplying the building materials of spaghetti and marshmallows and the caterers, Katerserve, who furnished meals for
the children at a subsidised cost.
Finally, sincere thanks to all the volunteers who played a part making the event a success. Next year will be the 10th Anniversary and plans are afoot for a grand event.
