Our 2018 Gold Medal: Professor Ding Jiemin FIStructE
Professor Ding Jiemin of Tongji Architectural Design (Group) Co., Ltd. has been awarded The Institution of Structural Engineers’ 2018 Gold Medal.
The award recognises his outstanding leadership directing the structural design of many iconic mega structures which now define modern Shanghai.
Professor Ding is well known for a number of buildings but is perhaps best recognised for his work on the Shanghai Tower, a remarkable 632m megatall skyscraper in Pudong, Shangahi.
Professor Ding said:
“I am honoured to receive the Gold Medal award. During my career I was lucky to have the opportunity to work at a time of very fast development in China, accumulating invaluable experience in the structural design of super high-rise buildings and long-span structures.
“Structural engineering will face many challenges from digitalisation in the coming years, but if I had a message for members it would be that such developments can also offer great support in our work. We need to make good use of information and digitalisation to provide the best possible service for our clients. My motto is ‘Do better tomorrow than today’!”
Martin Powell, Chief Executive of The Institution of Structural Engineers, said:
“Professor Ding is an outstanding leader in Chinese structural engineering and a major figure in the Institution’s global membership. His vision in structural design has helped define the astonishing development in Shanghai over recent years, and he is a worthy recipient of our Award, which over the last century has recognised greats from Ove Arup to Pier Luigi Nervi.’
Professor Ding will give his Gold Medal Address at the Marco Polo Hotel in Hong Kong on 4 October 2018, on the subject of Innovation and Practice of Structural Design.
Both Martin Powell and Institution President, Faith Wainwright, will attend this most prestigious event in the Institution calendar.
