Penny Gowler and Rachael De'Ath

Congratulations to Penny Gowler MIStructE, Associate Director at Elliott Wood, and Rachael De’Ath MIStructE, Senior Structural Engineer with Arup.

The WE50 campaign aims to raise awareness of the skills shortage facing the industry, change perceptions and encourage young women to consider engineering as a rewarding career.

For 2018, the theme was “Returners or Transferrers”. Nominations were available to women working in engineering or allied sector/discipline, having either returned after a break of at least 18 months or transferred to engineering from another sector.

Penny led the project to refurbish the Ned Hotel, London. She is the youngest Associate Director in Elliott Wood’s history, revolutionising the company’s entire internal communications structure, and works as a leading advocate for diversity in engineering, mentoring young women engineers.

She said:

“It’s brilliant to be recognised on the list - but most importantly it’s great to be helping raise the profile of women returning and transferring to engineering; this is a pool of talent that I encourage all employers to tap into.”

Rachael is both a senior teaching associate at the University of Bristol and Senior Structural Engineer at Arup. As Arup Bristol’s STEM coordinator, she manages an outreach programme that involves sending engineers into schools to run workshops and organise in-office events. Her structural engineering interests lie in work on existing buildings.

She said:

“STEM career opportunities aren’t always well promoted in early careers advice, which is why I dedicate time to educating students about the exciting range of engineering roles. I was delighted to hear that I made the list: I have been working as an engineer with Arup for 15 years and it is nice to receive recognition.”
