Meet Frazer, Exams Manager

Published: 11/07/2018

Frazer Clist is the Institution’s new Exams Manager. Here he explains his role, provides some information about the July 2018 and January 2019 exam sittings, and answers some common questions.

In my new role I look after most things to do with Institution exams: I make sure you get invited to sit the right exam, have somewhere to sit it, and that your paper gets marked. I also coordinate the production of all the exam scripts: there are over 60 exam centres all around the world, and over 1,000 candidates a year, and the number is always growing. I also let candidates know if they’ve passed or failed the exam - the latter part being one of the less enjoyable parts.

When should candidates contact you?

If you have any questions about the Institution’s Chartered Membership, Associate Membership, and Specialist Diploma exams – or if you’d like to appeal your result – you should contact me: that includes questions about exam content, where you can sit the exam, or eligibility. I’ll be in touch as soon as I can.

When should candidates not contact you?

If you’re looking for a good exam preparation course (which we would really encourage) you should see what’s available Near You or check out the HQ CPD programme.

Also it's worth bearing in mind that I get incredibly busy around the January and July exams - I will always reply to your email, but it could take longer than normal. Rest assured, if you’ve paid your exam entry fee I will send you all of the info you need in good time.

What are some commonly asked questions?

I quite often get asked for advice about preparing for the exam: we have some great top tips from former candidates which I would really recommend.

How is the Chartered Membership exam put together and marked?

Five questions are picked from our question bank by two assessors: each question selected will have been written by a different Chartered Member, many of whom are Fellows of the Institution.

The two assessors adjust the questions as necessary to make sure that they are all at the appropriate level, before the exam paper is produced.

We have a pool of around 70 Members and Fellows who mark the exam. All the marking examiners have been through rigorous training to confirm that they understand the standard that The Institution is look for.

The July 2018 Chartered and Associate-Membership exams

Best of luck to everyone who sat the exam in July! We had 590 candidates sit the Chartered and Associate-Member exams in 64 exam venues this year. The results will be out at the beginning of October. Your results will arrive via email, so you should ensure we’ve got your correct email address by logging in to My Account

The January 2019 Chartered Membership exam

The deadline for applications is 23 November 2018.

The January 2019 Specialist Diplomas

The deadline for applying to sit either the Offshore Structural Engineering or Seismic Engineering Specialist Diplomas is also 23 November 2018. Applications for these Diplomas are accepted all year round.
