New website, new brand: the Institution in 2019

Published: 18/12/2018

Chief Executive, Martin Powell, describes some of the exciting developments members can expect next year.

As a global Institution we’re dedicated to providing relevant support to members, evolving with the profession to meet your needs. We want to deliver real value, using digital platforms to better connect our international community – now numbering over 30,000.

New website

It’s essential that we embrace an ambitious vision to provide members and supporters with better access to our excellent online content. Our existing website, last substantially overhauled in 2008, now lags well behind the capabilities you expect.

In 2019 (Q1/Q2) istructe.org will be re-launched, featuring a refreshed brand and a new layout, designed to let you find the resources, training, events and membership information you need quickly and efficiently – on all kinds of devices, from mobile (cell) phones to tablets.

More details will be forthcoming in the new year.

Better communications

You may have noticed changes to the emails you receive from the Institution, most noticeably from our Regional Groups. This is part of a concerted effort to provide you with more tailored communications that better address your needs and highlight Institution resources and events that are of real interest to you.

New brand

Our new brand will launch at the same time as our new site. The brand will equally better serve our communications with you, providing flexibility across our social media platforms and refreshing our approach to reflect a modern, accessible Institution.

As with all good things, everything won’t be instantly achieved! The roll out of the new website will provide a new platform on which to build and marks a significant financial commitment from the Institution’s Trustee Board for further digital developments in the years ahead.

All our changes have been based on extensive consultations with our users and we hope will transform the way you interact online with the Institution.

The Future of our Profession

If you’ve not had a chance to read your November/December issue of The Structural Engineer I do recommend the short two-page signpost paper “The future of our profession”.

It is the output of a facilitated Council workshop and poses some fascinating challenges to both members and the Institution as we consider the changing world and how the role of the professional structural engineer will need to adapt, using new skills to tackle new opportunities.

Over the course of 2019 we expect to see this conversation develop and help steer our development priorities in meeting the profession’s changing needs.

And finally

In recent years, the Institution has forged a collaborative alliance with the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). It is our aim to jointly host an international conference every other year. In early January we will launch the microsite for the first of these conferences, which will be held in Dubai from 29-30 September 2019, focused on learning from iconic global structures. We hope you will “mark the date”.

With all best wishes in the run-up to the end of 2018 and the New Year to follow

Martin Powell
