The 2018 President’s Award: Alastair Soane

Published: 13/12/2018

Congratulations to Alastair Soane, Director of Structural-Safety, which oversees the Confidential Reporting on Structural Safety (CROSS) scheme.

Faith Wainwright, 2018 President, chose to present the award to recognise Alastair’s outstanding contribution to safety in the built environment.

Presidents make the awards at their discretion where they believe members deserve special praise. Faith noted Alastair’s “total commitment to establishing the CROSS scheme, influencing government, and promoting the global applicability of CROSS.”

The CROSS scheme is jointly sponsored by the Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers, together with the UK’s Health & Safety Executive. Faith observed that 2018 was a significant year for the scheme after the launch of CROSS Australasia, which she helped to unveil during her visit to Adelaide in September.

Alastair expressed his absolute delight and, as a life-long supporter of the Institution, said that he “could not imagine a greater honour”, noting the enthusiasm and dedication of many others including the originators within SCOSS (the Standing Committee on Structural Safety), Committee and Panel members, and the hundreds of engineers who have submitted reports.
