Northern Counties Regional Group Celebrate Outstanding Structural Engineering

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees of the Northern Counties Regional Awards 2018.

Institution members and guests gathered at the River Terrace Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art overlooking the
iconic bridges of the River Tyne on Friday 30 November 2018 to enjoy an evening celebrating the fantastic people
and projects of the Northern Counties Region.

The 2018 Northern Counties Regional Awards and dinner evening was hosted by the charismatic radio and television presenter Melissa Crawford. Conor Owen, a Tyneside-based singer and musician welcomed the guests with his silky, serenading singing.

The Awards competition is co-ordinated by the IStructE Northern Counties Committee annually to recognise, support and encourage the hard work, dedication and world-class competence of individual structural engineers and teams
based in the Teesside, Tyneside and Cumbrian regions. As was the case in the previous competitions, the quality
of the nominations received has been of a very high standard.

The Awards were given under three individual categories and five team/project categories.  The competition
attracted nominations from structural engineering firms of a very small-scale through to those of multi-national presence.

The organisations participating in this edition of the awards competition include:

Billinghurst George & Partners, Blackett-Ord Conservation Engineers, Cundall, James Christopher Consulting, Portland Consulting Engineers, SHED, Structural and Civil Consultants, Vemury Structural Consultancy Ltd and WSP.  

SHED, a Newcastle based structural design consultancy won the Large Projects Award for their work on the
structure titled ‘Tombola’.  James Christopher Consulting who are also a Newcastle based design firm received the award under Medium.  Projects Award category for Mount Grace Priory project.  Northallerton-based Structural and
Civil Consultants received the Small Projects Award.  The judging panel selected the design team at Cundall for
Most Innovative Project award.  The team from Blackett-Ord Conservation Engineers who are based in Carlisle
receive the award under Heritage Projects category.  Billinghurst George & Partners, Portland Consulting
Engineers and WSP received Special Commendation awards for their excellent design contributions.

Alison Church who is a chartered structural engineer received Young Engineer award while Paul Currie received Special Commendation. Geoff Minto, a Technical Director at WSP received Outstanding Contribution
Award for the leadership and mentoring support he has been offering to his junior colleagues. Marc Watson
received best Technician Award.

The 2019 edition of the IStructE Northern Counties Structural Awards and Dinner event shall be held on Friday, 22 November 2019 at the River Terrace Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.
