International registration and qualification

International professional engineers (IntPE) qualification

This qualification is governed by the Engineers' Mobility Forum (EMF), which consists of the national engineering organisations of Ireland, UK, USA, Canada, South Africa, Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Korea, New Zealand, Chinese Taipai, India, Singapore and Sri Lanka. The qualification is open to engineers who:

  • are registered Chartered Engineers (CEng) with the Engineering Council
  • have exemplifying academic qualifications e.g. an accredited MEng
  • have seven years post-graduate experience
  • have two years responsibility of significant engineering work
  • are maintaining continuing professional development

The Engineering Council is currently unable to receive applications from Chartered Engineers who have achieved this status through the Technical Report Route or any other non-standard route.

UK applications can be made through the Institution or through any other member institution of Engineering Council.

Although the signatories are not providing mutual recognition of the professional title at this time, they are committed to making the admittance to national registers easier. Applicants applying through the Institution will nevertheless have to undertake the professional review (interview and examination).

Engineers wishing to register as IntPE can download an application form from the Engineering Council. Applicants should read the guidance notes before completing the application form. The registration fee is £105, renewable every five years at a fee of £60. Payments should be made to 'The Institution of Structural Engineers'. Applications should be submitted to the Institution’s Membership department.
