PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This massive 66,000m² new PFI hospital had to meet the significant challenges of a steeply sloping site, with 28 metres level difference and a very demanding programme. From the onset it was decided to fully utilise BIM to model the various three to seven storey concrete buildings and to standardise as much as possible.

Working closely with the contractor, the designer adopted solutions aimed at buildability and speed of construction, as well as matching the demanding user aspects of footfall vibration in critical areas. Delivering it 6 months ahead of programme was a considerable achievement.

Judge's comment:

"As one of the earliest uses of BIM in building design the successful delivery of such a large project in a very short programme is an excellent achievement to be applauded. The selection of engineering solutions was clearly very carefully considered to meet all the challenges of the site and achieve all the project goals."
