The Serpentine Sackler Gallery
The Serpentine Gallery
London, United Kingdom
A new art gallery for The Serpentine Gallery in London’s Kensington Gardens. The project required the sensitive refurbishment and repurposing of the existing Magazine building - a grade II listed 19th century munitions store – and creating a new extension for special events and functions. The building was extended with an extraordinary fabric roof which had to comply fully with the current energy standards.
The engineers have helped to breathe new life into an under-used heritage building. They showed skill and judgement in balancing the architect’s sculptural aspirations with the thermal and day-lighting requirements for the building. The roof form pushes the limits of normal minimal tension structures and it therefore required some unusual engineering thinking in the quest for an optimum solution. This is a bold yet fitting addition to a significant historic building.
