PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This concert building, built adjacent to a historic conservation area in Shanghai, China, is designed to have the best acoustic properties in the world. A double-layer, concrete, shell box structure was used to achieve excellent sound insulation, while vibration isolation reduces secondary noise from the adjacent subway and traffic. Pianist Lang Lang said, “I have performed in many top Concert Halls in the world, and this hall is terrific!” The concert and chamber halls are submerged into the basement, protecting the character of the surrounding conservation area and guaranteeing residents an undisturbed living environment.

Judge's comment:

This project is replete with technical accomplishments that are very well executed. The box in box concert hall is base isolated within a complex deep basement and topped off with a very elegant, acoustically beneficial and structurally logical, doubly curved concrete roof.
