A large and impressive building complex with extensive cantilevers, designed to achieve set requirements at different levels of seismic event, including No Structural Damage during a 50 year return ‘Level1’ earthquake. The structure also achieves a 3 star (highest) rating of Green Code sustainability criteria. The 255m high tower supports a large 3-storey podium 36m above ground level, which cantilevers up to 37m from the braced tube supporting structure. The podium consists of main steel trusses supporting secondary composite trusses and beams spanning 22m to maximise clear internal space. Deflection of just 18mm was measured on removal of the props following construction of the podium.

Judge's comment:

The judges found this to be a considerable feat of structural engineering incorporating seismic design of a tall building which includes large cantilevers in a 3-storey podium structure.  Responding to structurally challenging architecture in a rational and analytical manner, the engineer succeeds in providing a sensational building with good sustainability credentials.  A combination of steel frames and trusses, composite floor trusses and beams, with a concrete core has enabled optimisation of the structural system.
