PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Red Bridge House beautifully demonstrates the art and science of the Structural Engineer through enabling the realisation of an architectural vision, involving extensively-glazed facades and clear views out to the landscape beyond. The reinforced concrete core structure is partially embedded into the hillside, helping to minimise visual impact while serving as a substantial anchorage to resist the significant overturning forces generated by the cantilevering steel superstructure above. A two-storey Vierendeel truss spanning the length of the building provides unencumbered space at ground and first floor levels, while the free space below allows a basement-level swimming pool to be positioned to maximum advantage.

Judge's comment:

Elegant design and elegant detailing combine to give this daringly-conceived project the feeling of lightness and openness. The end result amply rewards the painstaking analysis carried out to harmonise the progressive, cumulative deflections brought about by the layout and erection sequence. The outcome is a delightful residence, which must surely be the envy of the neighbourhood.
