PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Set in a remote area of peaceful woodland in the North Yorkshire village of Wass, Stanbrook Abbey is a new eco-friendly home for Benedictine Nuns. The nunnery comprises a church, chapel, sacristy, four parlours and a conference room.
The architecturally exposed reinforced concrete curved walls have been carefully designed and detailed to simultaneously act as a load bearing, shear and retaining wall to support the engineered timber roof elements, provide overall stability and overcome the varying ground levels.
Judge's comment: The judges were taken with the sympathetic and considered detailing of the expressed structural timber and concrete that complement the architecture to deliver simplicity and calm to this building.
