This 28,200m2 multi-use building provides a world class venue dedicated to the development and performance of Xiqu (Chinese Opera).

In order to maximise the use of a constrained site the 1,100-seat grand theatre is suspended 25m above a column free public plaza with a clear span of 37m.

Judge's comment:

The engineers strikingly ambitious answer to a complex spatial problem was to elevate the theatre bowl, complete with its fly tower, rigging grid and associated services some 30m up into the air, to allow a new four storey public amphitheatre and high value shopping concourse to be created at ground floor level.

This was achieved by constructing six reinforced concrete ‘mega column’ pylons, onto which strand jacks were mounted, enabling an S460 Grade fabricated steel transfer truss assembly weighing 1,800 tonnes to be progressively jacked into position 50m above ground level.

The theatre structure was then suspended from the transfer structure, leaving below it sufficient space for large ventilation plenum to serve the theatre auditorium, and a column-free zone 37m across, to accommodate a spectacular public plaza.
