International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney is one of Australia’s largest multi-modal convention, exhibition and entertainment precincts. The $1.5 billion project was won as a competitive PPP bid in 2012 and all PPP facilities were delivered at the end of 2016. The three main buildings consisted of 40,000m2 of exhibition space over two floors, eight levels of concourse area, circulation space, meeting rooms and truck loading docks, a theatre able to seat 8000 guests, 2500m2 ballroom, multiple meeting and conference rooms and full service kitchen facilities.
This project demanded careful consideration of construction techniques that were practical and allowed work to proceed as rapidly as possible.
For the upper floor of the exhibition hall the team developed a system that was practical to erect in large but manageable pieces. This used a quadruped arm framework at every column location. The results are both elegant and economic.
To avoid excessive need for cranes when installing the massive steel roof, it was pre-assembled on site. The pre-assembled elements were then jacked up into their final position.
This is a very good example of a contractor adapting a design to methods that work well for them and at the same time gave the client a project of lasting value.
