Florida Polytechnic University is a new academic institution dedicated to the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The two story IST Building features 26 teaching laboratories and classrooms, 11 research laboratories, two seminar rooms, 17 group meeting rooms, faculty offices, a library and a large amphitheatre, plus a prominent glass and steel cupola. A steel-framed pergola with 84 arched aluminium “leaves” provides shade for the terraces and arcades, while the sculptural roof features an array of wing-like shading louvers that move to track the sun during the course of the day, optimising daylight.

Judge's comment:

The Innovation, Science and Technology Building is the gateway to the new campus, and designed to inspire.  Beautifully detailed two-storey in-situ reinforced concrete frames support the upper floor and roof.  The spectacular Calatrava signature is the sculptural roof with its array of wing-like louvers controlled by hydraulic pistons that move to track the sun to optimise day lighting.  A pergola of elegant 12 metre high aluminium frames surrounds and shades the building, reducing solar gain by 30%.
