Perched on the edge of a mountain overlooking Whistler Village in British Columbia, Canada, this stunning, custom-built family home took six years to construct and required a number of innovative structural solutions by the design team: The “floating” infinity edge concrete pool is anchored into recesses that were blasted in the mountainside. A thin profile, curved wood staircase has each tread supported by pre-tensioned, stainless steel cables, each “tuned” like a guitar. The cantilevered laminated wood decks were constructed from Douglas Fir logs, reclaimed from a recent wind storm in Vancouver’s famous Stanley Park.

Judge's comment:

This is a beautifully elegant building design for a sensitive setting with significant site and climate constraints. The judges liked the use of timber for the cantilevering decks which span back into the internal space, thereby creating a visually striking ceiling without the need for any additional finishes.
