PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Walton Bridge is a new crossing of the UK’s River Thames, replacing an existing highway structure.  The dramatic thrust arches span 96m between springings, with elegant hexagonal sections that taper to suit the forces.  Significant efforts were used in the design to justify the stability of the arches, both globally and locally, and the consequent lack of any bracing between the two arches is a beautiful result.  The design and build team supported the whole project through public consultation and working as an effective team with the client to deliver an exceptional project.

Judge's comment:

This, simple yet elegant, project demonstrates the ability of the design and build process in delivering a high value and delightful bridge. The team worked tirelessly over many years to thoroughly satisfy the changing demands of the project at every level.
