Bridge across the Waschmühl Valley

The new extradosed bridge was+ constructed to provide extra capacity to the existing arch viaduct carrying the A6 near Kaiserslautern. The bridge deck is of steel-concrete composite ladder construction, with two main edge girders connected by transverse girders, and is made integral with the piers. The concrete deck is composite only with the cross girders to make the superstructure more adaptable and replaceable in future. An extrados bridge was chosen to create a light ribbon-like deck structure with fewer piers than the original arch to leave open views of the historic construction.
The judges commented that the extrados bridge was a thoughtful choice for the setting, facilitating creation of a very slender deck with larger spans than the original arch viaduct whilst the short towers emphasise the arch rhythm without dominating it. Overall, the new construction maintains an open view of the existing historic arch while creating a striking modern structure in its own right.
