This footbridge enhances visitor experience of the historic Goodland Gardens. Its location, the Castle Moat, is a Scheduled Ancient Monument of national importance requiring extreme sensitivity in design and construction. Creating a low-level structure that appears to float across the ground is achieved using a continuous concrete beam that is integral with the piers and piled foundations which flex under thermal movement. Glass balustrades and edge strips emphasise lightness and transparency. The beam was designed for variable support points to allow for the possibility of encountering buried archeologically important artefacts during construction.

Judge's comment:

This elegant and thoughtfully designed structure impressed the judges because of its flexibility in support positions and attention to detail to achieve stunning visual impact and minimal maintenance requirements.
