PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Refurbishment and upgrade of a late Victorian terrace house set within a conservation area. The house is a four storey property, 15m long and 6m wide, with solid masonry walls, timber floors and load bearing stud walls. The client asked for a contemporary look, open space and plenty of natural light. The architect therefore decided to make the rear of the house “fly”. The project featured substantial engineering challenges with different materials (timber, masonry, concrete, steel and glass) and demanded a creative approach to problem solving.
Judge's comment:
This refurbishment and upgrade of a late Victorian terrace house transforms this building into a contemporary living space, modified through extensive study and adaptation of existing structure married with innovative and varied material use and construction techniques.
This project demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of almost every aspect of structural engineering in one small building; the challenges of stitching old and new structure together, of combining different materials and using them in less conventional ways in combination with complex interaction of the building and its foundation. This was an ambitious structural design with aesthetics at its heart.
