PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Tipton swimming centre is a modern sustainable facility, which welcomed community involvement from the start. Consultations with the local community resulted in various needs and requirements being captured and delivered including the multi use function rooms, which can be used for meetings as well as fitness studios. The simple structural concept ably addressed the constraints of a brownfield site with loose fill and mine legacies. The contamination treatment strategy and ground profile design reused all material on site, creating a saving of 1588 lorry miles, which helped the structure achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Judge's comment:

The judges found the glulam timber frame over the pool area to be an elegant, low maintenance and durable structure incorporating many sustainability factors, including solar thermal panels, drainage systems and high level of natural lighting. Making use of durable materials with low maintenance requirements helped make this a cost-effective solution to the community’s vision for a swimming, dance, fitness and community hub.
