PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A new, mixed-use development in Redcar, North Yorkshire, comprising a civic facility, business suites and a new leisure centre, the Heart is the flagship development in an extensive regeneration of the area. Opened to the public in April 2014, the project has already established itself as an integral part of the town and has had a big impact on the local economy, sourcing 80% of its steelwork form Redcar Mill and creating 260 jobs. It also provides much needed fitness and swimming facilities for local people, including a Flow-Rider standing wave machine.

Judge's comment:

This is the flagship development in an extensive regeneration project. The large size and distinct uses of different areas required several different construction types, including ground bearing concrete in the pool areas, a moment frame stability system for the debating chamber, contiguous and secant piles to manage variant groundwater levels and a combination of precast lattice slabs and composite steel and poured slabs to provide the most affordable solution in critical areas. A landmark structure that brings real benefits to the local community.
