PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project for Waterford City Council was the key stone in the redevelopment of the Viking Triangle quarter of the City and displays Waterford’s rich collection of medieval material. The Structural Engineer’s role was central to the form and concept of the design.  The reinforced concrete structure allowed the clear spans required over the existing 13th Century Choristers Hall and could be tailored to suit the different requirements for the museum and the extension to the Theatre Royal that was incorporated into the project. The concrete walls also provided suitable backing to the curved stone cladding.

Judge's comment:

The structural engineer has designed a reinforced concrete frame that has allowed them to solve the various challenges whilst conforming to the overall requirements for the project. The use of the various concrete walls as interconnected deep beams shows a clear understanding of structural principles and an ability to use them for their client’s benefit.
