The SBAA Environmental Center is located on a vantage point in Akrotiri overlooking the salt lakes and wetland system. This important habitat is a special protection area for birds like Flamingos and flora including more than 30 different orchid species. The SBAA Center was designed as an educational facility to encourage awareness about the wetlands among schools and the general public. It welcomes around 1000 visitors per year. The building has a low carbon footprint, producing half its electricity with photovoltaic cells, hot water with solar panels and irrigation water by a small sewage treatment plant.

Judge's comment:

The judges agreed that this project combines efficient handling of concrete and steel to create an elegant building that deserves recognition. Such simple elegance requires a good eye for detail and a concern for the overall composition which this small practice of engineers has clearly demonstrated that it has. The project reflects sensitive and sustainable design in a way that is likely to engage the general public interest.
