PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This private residence on the Sussex Downs occupies three levels, comprising a small basement, an open plan living area and office on the ground floor, and bedrooms and bathrooms on the first. There is also an annex facility building housing a gym, car port, and plant room. The roof is formed of 147 triangular Cross-laminated timber planes. The building features highly sustainable construction elements including a separately housed bio mass boiler, an insulated beam and block floor, upper storey insulation wrap, louvered solar shading and high performance glass to inhibit heat loss.

Judge's comment:

This project successfully brings together timber, concrete, steel and high performance glass into a beautifully resolved composition.  The judges felt that the structural engineering is restrained and well considered at every point with an eye-catching, yet simply conceived, timber roof. The detailing is underplayed and the whole has an elegance that enhances the quality of the architecture.
