PROJECT DESCRIPTION

‘The Watershed’ is the name given to the redeveloped Blue Shed, situated along the pedestrian route from Victoria Wharf Mall to the Two Oceans Aquarium. The existing shed structure was re-used to create a new venue comprising an undercover street, market space, offices and exhibition hall. A pedestrian street has been routed through the building, and new floors in the central portion of the shed were suspended from the existing roof structure and gantry beams. Translucent skylights, high performance glazing, roof insulation, ridge ventilators and open gable ends are used to passively provide comfortable internal conditions.

Judge's comment:

This renovation project impressed the judges for its commitment to preservation and the way in which the engineers worked hard to keep the impact of the changes to a minimum. As a result the new work blends seamlessly into the old, maintaining the quality of the original without any needless drama or loss of integrity. The building will be an asset for further generations.
