PROJECT DESCRIPTION

These new school and community buildings were erected by a largely unskilled workforce of Orkidstudio volunteers and local people in eight weeks, during monsoon season.

The centre uses a “Fabric formwork” design - a simple and robust construction method for casting reinforced concrete beams and columns. StructureMode researched and tested the technique both physically and using computer analysis, before producing 3D sequencing diagrams to illustrate and simplify the construction process.

Judge's comment:

Each year sees emerging technologies coming to the fore and making the transition from imagination and research  into application and reality. This project embodies such a technology and is a great credit to the small but determined group who brought it into being, with the assistance of an equally determined mixed male/female local labour force. The judges were highly enthusiastic about the construction details that were developed to make the use of fabric formwork a practical reality - especially given the climatic difficulties of the location - as well as the integration of local vernacular features in the sustainable design of the structure as a whole.
