PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The “Ring of Celestial Bliss” was originally the main lantern of the 2013 Taiwan Lantern Festival. In its second phase it became a permanent semi-outdoor basketball court in Southern Taiwan, reusing 100% of its structural elements.
In phase one a curved, truss-type lantern structure was formed out of recyclable steel pipes, covered by a bamboo façade. In phase two the ring structure was separated into two arcs, serving as the supports of a new steel structure roof.
Judge's comment:
The judges admired the way in which the Structural Engineer saw the opportunity to use a single design concept to serve two entirely different purposes. Through foresight and imagination it proved possible initially to use the curved, prismatic tubular steel frame to deliver a striking corporate statement about technical prowess. The structure was subsequently divided into two, re-located and re-configured to provide a much-needed community asset, thus providing a clear statement of the value that can be added through the ingenuity and skill of the Structural Engineer.
