PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The “Future of Us” exhibition, held from December 2015 to March 2016, celebrated Singapore’s Golden Jubilee. More than 400,000 visitors experienced a stunning play of light and shade cast by the Gridshell structure.
The structure was composed of 11,000 perforated aluminium panels, 12,040 Bolts, 11,188 Steel Plates and 4,620 Steel Elements. The Gridshell spanned approximately 50m and rose to 16m.
Judge's comment:
This eye-catching exhibition enclosure demonstrates the structural engineer's technical skill and ingenuity in rationalising an apparently complex geometry, and developing a portfolio of adaptable, repetitive connection details, to allow simplicity of fabrication and ease of erection. The judges were particularly impressed by the way in which the vertically-orientated structural arches were formed using a maximum of four curve radii, the inner and outer cladding panels were each secured using just six simple fixings and the whole structure was assembled in just five weeks.
