Flanked by a secret garden wall and castle landscaping, the radiating diagrid pattern weaves and forms a new building which complements the landscape and characteristics of the wider Barretstown grounds and structures. The building blurs the lines of indoor/ outdoor space with irregular shapes and floating terraces, creating a playful place in constant dialogue with nature and an inclusive space for all of Barretstown to enjoy collectively. The new larger building is a dynamic, sustainable and open building, located centrally in the existing campus.

Judge's comment:

The Structural Engineering of Barretstown Hall is a wonderful example of structural engineering enhancing and contributing to the quality of a building. In this case, the exposed timber structure's diagrid roof and elegant tripod cigar shaped columns provide the necessary function of the building, respond to constraints of the site and at the same time provide a playful and aesthetically appealing interior. The engineering is a sensitive response to both the natural environment outside and the purpose of the building and its intended use inside. This is achieved through choice of materials and careful attention to detail and form.
