PROJECT DESCRIPTION

East London House is an excellent example of work carried out by a host of structural engineers - often unseen and unrecognised - in support of architects or interior designers to improve, extend and otherwise breathe new life into existing properties. In this case, the structural engineer investigated, analysed, checked and designed a series of radical interventions within a Grade II listed masonry structure, including removing areas of internal cross-wall and external facade, strengthening floor plates to ensure diaphragm action, removing a floor to create a double-height space and providing new skeletal structures in a variety of forms and materials, in order to transform this property dramatically.

Judge's comment:

The judges are particularly impressed with the attention paid at each stage of the project to minimise settlements and distortions of the structure as load paths were progressively modified, as well as the care taken with the structural detailing, which in close coordination with other disciplines enabled the delivery of a project to be proud of.
