PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The new Queen Alia International Airport will serve as the main gateway to Amman, securing the city's position as the main hub for the Levant Region. The concept itself involved the development of a striking roof structure under which the entire airport building could operate. Its architectural design will allow the airport to grow by six percent per annum for the next 25 years, increasing capacity from three million to 12.8 million passengers per annum by 2030.
Judge's comment:
The project maximised off-site precast construction for the majority of visual surfaces of the roof; the families of nodes and connections have been meticulously detailed. The roof structure is a regular series of domes arranged on a regular grid, with skylights between each dome providing a striking contrast between opaque and light features.
