PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Malt Store is an iconic brewery building and a piece of Melbourne's history, the only remaining building from a historic brewery complex which once occupied the entire city block and operated for 130 years. After decades of neglect the Store was badly deteriorated and on the verge of being condemned. The project team rejuvenated the structure and repurposed it into a modern retail and office space, whilst retaining the style and integrity of the original heritage structure. The design showcases its structural elegance, repairing and strengthening the building to last another century or more.

Judge's comment:

The judges admired the structural restoration of this building, integrating new elements within the old, in order to discretely incorporate the additions. The structure has been carefully repurposed providing the building with a new lease of life.
