PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A Major refurbishment of four Grade II Listed Victorian houses, on a busy road opposite Buckingham Palace. The work included two and three storey basements to contain the swimming pool and the car stacker. Challenges included building these deep basements in unstable ground close to the River Tyburn, using a number of different techniques for the retaining walls, and complex top-down construction of the floors.
Judge's comment: The deep basements, one 10.3 m and three 8.6 m, under four large Victorian houses to get inthe inevitable swimming pool and the car stacker required exceptional care. The Tyburn flowed through the site and the ground conditions were difficult. Various forms of retaining walls were used, together with top-down construction of floors. An excellent example of how engineering can transform the use of an old building.
