The careful restoration and retention of the existing Grade II Listed cast iron roof (dating back to 1881) was found to be the most sustainable option for this project. It was achieved despite considerable corrosion and widespread cracking found throughout the structure. The secret to the successful completion of this project is the painstaking survey of every aspect of the existing structure, innovative thinking and attention to detail. This is backed up by careful management to ensure maximum retention of the existing structure with minimum replacement.
The judges were won over by the sympathetic restoration and retention of the Tynemouth Railway Station. The strategy adopted to save this structure reduced the impact to the existing fabric; and by working in sections rather than replacing entire lengths of original ironwork, the restoration work was kept to an absolute minimum. All in all, a beautifully sensitive retention project.
