PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Judge's comment: This is the first long span cable supported concrete bridge constructed in the UK and its completion marks a significant evolutionary step in the use of concrete for similar applications in the future. The judges appreciate how construction techniques informed the design of the bridge throughout. Key decisions were driven around utilising rapid construction techniques, speed of construction and the design and construction of large marine foundations in the estuary. For a project of this scale, collaboration between designer and constructor is the key to success. Such collaboration was exemplified in the construction of the approach viaducts, which adopted a Moveable Scaffold System (MSS) and the use of sliding formwork travellers for the balanced cantilevers of the cable-stayed deck. A very impressive cable stayed structure.
