PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The installation of five wind turbine generators (WTGs) by the semiā€submersible crane vessel Saipem 7000 on Statoil’s Hywind Scotland project using the Saipem Stability Frame. Hywind Scotland is the world’s first floating wind farm. This was also the world’s first installation of a fully assembled WTG onto a floating substructure. The stability frame used 25% of the material of a traditional frame and was far more efficient in terms of execution schedule. This delivered a cost saving to the project of 1.7m euros. The assembly was carried out in Stord, Norway, then the fully assembled turbines were towed to Scotland.

The design of a customised stability frame for turbine wind generators on the world’s first floating wind farms is a really clever piece of construction engineering. The lifting system not only solves temporary stability problems in a clean, tidy manner relative to conventional approaches, but also reduces costs and can be reused for future operations. This is temporary works engineering at its best.
