PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A mega-scale mixed-use development with an overall gross floor area of 1,100,000m2 It includes a shopping mall and eight towers for residential, office and hotel use. In this seismic region, engineers needed to provide structurally safe, cost effective and buildable solutions. Challenges included the very slender tall towers and multi-tower sky bridges.

Judge's comment:

This project is a super high-rise 8 tower building complex. The main structures consist of two 350m high towers and four separate 250m high towers each of which are connected by the world’s highest 300 m long sky bridge.
Given that Chongqing is located in a moderate seismic zone, the project was able to adopt a stability structural system which comprises a RC core, 4 corner mega columns, belt trusses, secondary gravity frame and an innovative outrigger system for the slender 350m high towers. 

To address to the challenges and overcome the shortcomings of a traditional steel outrigger truss system an innovative hybrid outrigger system with a structural fuse was designed. This innovative system, which is suitable for high-rise buildings in moderately seismic regions, saved 10% of steel consumption in the construction compared with a traditional outrigger system. It also simplified the steel connection joints and shortened the construction program by four months.

Although the project lead to a very complex and challenging construction process, it is impressive that the whole structural and façade construction was completed within a very tight schedule and required very clever methodology and sequencing.
