PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A 22,000 seat venue for Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Football Club. The stadium features an exposed structure, long span cantilevers and a roof clad with 190,000ft² of single-layer ETFE film supported by cables. The project is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.

Judge's comment:

The 30m long cantilever spans of the Banc of California Stadium roof are fantastic examples of the engineer’s art of reducing visual clutter, leaving only the essential elements. The cantilevered structural steel trusses are themselves lightweight in appearance. By using cable supported ETFE cushions to complete the roof over the 13m between the trusses, the roof as a whole is kept looking much like an engineer’s quick pen sketch to illustrate the structural principles and is a great credit to the engineers involved. The difficulty in achieving this apparent simplicity in a complex roof structure is a not to be underestimated and was executed with style.
